Professor Wayne Chang was a beloved teacher, mentor, and champion for students. His passion for entrepreneurship and his unwavering belief in the potential of others shaped lives at the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business, across the University of Waterloo, and throughout the venture community. In classrooms, startup meetings, and late-night check-ins, Wayne radiated positivity, energy, and care.
Many of us remember how, after class, Wayne would linger by the door until the hallway emptied, asking what you were building, who you had talked to, and how he could help. He remembered names, ideas, and small moments, then quietly connected people and opened doors. Students and colleagues left those conversations feeling seen, supported, and inspired.
Wayne brought a rare zest to our community. Collaboration with him made good ideas better and the work joyful. His care ran deep. He encouraged others to try something new, to explore, and to find the things in life that made them soar.
He often said, “the future is bright.” That was not a slogan. It was a promise he worked to make real for others. His optimism and encouragement will continue to shine through the students and entrepreneurs he supported so wholeheartedly.
To honour Wayne’s legacy, please consider a gift to Wayne Chang Memorial Fund.
Gifts in memory of Wayne will be held until his family and the University choose the most fitting use, informed by the amount raised.
