A citizen of the world, Sarah Inam (1984-2022) grew up living in Libya, Pakistan and Canada before attending the University of Waterloo, completing both her undergraduate (2005) and master’s (2007) degrees in economics.
She was a talented economist with a passion for education reform, employability and economic development initiatives, working with governments across the Gulf Region, Pakistan and Canada.
Kind, gentle and beautiful, Sarah loved history, economics and religion. She was a thinker and a voracious reader. She touched the hearts and enriched the lives of everyone who met her before she lost her life to domestic violence.
In one of her last Instagram posts, she quoted one of her favourite poets, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, saying, “Last night, your lost memory stole into my mind. It was as though Spring had suddenly brightened up my desolation. As though the desert had felt the softness of rain. As though the dying were given hope to live again.”
And in much the same way, memories of Sarah light up all those who knew her.
To honour her, we invite you to make a gift to the Sarah Inam Memorial Fund.
Donations will support the Sarah Inam Memorial Award, awarded annually to Economics students with demonstrated interest in the area of social justice, established to honour Sarah’s memory.
