S. T. Ariaratnam

S. T. Ariaratnam began his career at the University of Waterloo in September of 1962, as one of the first professors in the Department of Civil Engineering. At the time, his appointment to the Faculty was considered so newsworthy that it made the front page of the local paper.

Professor Ariaratnam (or “Ariam,” as he was known among his colleagues and friends) was a pioneer in the field of Theoretical Mechanics, where he made groundbreaking contributions to continuum mechanics and the analysis of nonlinear random vibrations. He had advanced degrees in mathematics and engineering, including a Ph.D. from Cambridge, and he was equally proficient in both disciplines.

Over a span of 40 years, Ariam helped to educate and inspire generations of young civil engineers through his commitment to teaching and research. His courses were notorious for being among the most difficult and intimidating in the entire engineering curriculum. Yet, his office door was always open to anyone who needed help (or who just wanted to chat over a cup of tea), and he was unfailingly kind and encouraging to his students. His dedication to teaching and mentorship left a profound and lasting impact on those fortunate enough to have learned from him.

He retired in 2001 and shortly thereafter was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus, in recognition of his extraordinary career and his vital role in helping to establish the University of Waterloo as a leading institution for engineering education and research.

This memorial fund is intended to stand as a tribute to Ariam’s enduring legacy at the university and as a reflection of the countless lives he influenced throughout his tenure here.

To honour Ariam’s legacy, please consider making a donation to the Professor S. T. Ariaratnam Memorial Fund. Contributions can be made online via credit card through the Support Waterloo Memorial website or by cheque payable to the University of Waterloo. If paying by cheque, please be sure to note "Professor S. T. Ariaratnam Memorial Fund" on the memo line.

Gifts in memory of Professor Ariaratnam will be held until his family and the University decide on the most fitting use for the fund, informed by the amount raised.
