Honouring a legacy of scientific brilliance, leadership and community
The University of Waterloo is honouring the memory of Raymond Laflamme, a renowned physicist, professor, beloved mentor, friend and dedicated community builder who left an indelible mark on the Faculty of Science, Department of Physics and Astronomy and the global scientific community. Your support keeps Ray’s legacy alive and empowers future physicists who share his passion and curiosity.
As the founding executive director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), Raymond built a world-renowned research centre that helped define Waterloo as Canada’s Quantum Valley and established Canada’s global reputation in quantum information science and technology. Raymond’s sense of curiosity and collaborative spirit extended beyond campus borders, as he became a founding faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Raymond was a visionary whose leadership not only shaped these institutions but also inspired countless students and researchers to believe in the potential of curiosity-driven discovery.
As a scientist, Raymond pursued quantum physics with passion and imagination, always pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. As a professor and mentor, he was known for his warmth, humour and his belief in the potential of every student. Throughout his career, Raymond found ways to bring people together as he cared deeply not only about what we learn and how we learn, but also about the people behind the science.
Memorial donations contributed in memory of Raymond Laflamme are held until such time the family, working with the University, can determine the best way to honour him based on the total contributions received.
