Celebrate the remarkable legacies of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Jerry Lawless and Distinguished Professor Emerita Mary Thompson by supporting two new graduate scholarships in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science.
To celebrate the legacies of Jerry Lawless and Mary Thompson, the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Waterloo is hosting a conference on May 28-29, 2024, and raising funds to support the creation of two new graduate scholarships in their names–the Jerald F. Lawless Graduate Scholarship in Biostatistics and the Mary E. Thompson Graduate Scholarship in Statistics. We are inviting past and present colleagues, students and associates of Jerry and Mary to make a financial contribution in support of these scholarships.
Your generous gift in support of these scholarships will:
- enable the Department to continue attracting top students from around the world;
- reward and recognize students who have distinguished themselves through excellence and innovation in research; and
- publicly acknowledge the foundational impact of Jerry Lawless and Mary Thompson on the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Waterloo and the Statistical Science community in Canada.
“Mary Thompson and Jerry Lawless are brilliant researchers, beloved teachers and bold leaders within the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. The Department’s excellent global reputation is, in many ways, a product of their pioneering efforts. In celebration of their 80th birthdays, we are establishing two new graduate scholarships in their names. These scholarships will help us recruit the best and brightest minds from across the world. What better way to recognize the impact of these visionaries than to ensure the Department’s continued strength! We hope that students, colleagues and associates whose lives have been touched by Jerry and Mary will find it in their hearts to support these scholarships.”
