Tom Lee studied Systems Design Engineering and graduated in 1988 with his BASc followed by MASc and PhD. When he was an undergraduate student, Tom was a mentor to many fellow students. He was particularly good at pointing them in directions that would enhance their social experience at school through extra-curricular activities, such as the Engineering Society, clubs and other activities. As a talented educator, he also informally assisted many other students with their academics. Scores of students can describe times when Tom helped them understand a concept or find a social activity that ended up changing their entire experience. Tom was not just a student leader himself (for example, chairing Engineering Orientation in 1988) – but he fostered the development of many other leaders, by gently nudging them in a direction that stirred their passions or leveraged their talents.
Tom excelled in academics, earning his Master’s and PhD (also from Waterloo Engineering). However, he struggled with the balance between social and academics in his early years. He was effective at coaching others to resolve this for themselves, to succeed at both and to become well-rounded individuals, good community members and leaders.
This award is to celebrate Tom’s legacy and recognize exceptional student leaders who selflessly help others, collaborate, mentor and contribute to and enhance the social fabric of Waterloo Engineering.

The funds raised will be held until the goal of $40,000, the minimum amount required to open an endowment fund at the University of Waterloo, is achieved. Should the goal not be reached by May 2028, the funds will be used to support annual awards and will be spent over a finite period of time.
