Optometry and Vision Science Challenge #2

When 75 unique donors make a gift to the Waterloo Eye Institute Fund, an extra $5,000 will be unlocked!

Waterloo Eye Institute Fund

At the centre of the Seeing Beyond 2020 campaign, the Waterloo Eye Institute will help us better serve patients across the country by pushing the boundaries of clinical care, optometric education and vision research. This once-in-a-generation initiative will create a comprehensive, one-stop centre for eye and vision care. It will help bridge the gaps between health care providers and increase patient access to services in growing areas of need such as vision therapy, macular degeneration and dry eye.

The Waterloo Eye Institute will give optometrists the tools to deliver a new level of patient care by:

  • re-imagining the patient pathway – fully serving our patients’ vision care needs from wellness through surgery to rehabilitation, from ages 1 to 101
  • harnessing expertise in ocular imaging and biomedical sciences research — expanding our understanding of the connections between the eye and brain to discover techniques and treatments that will enhance health care
  • preparing students and the profession for the highest level of optometric practice in North America, to expand access to vision care for patients across Canada

Meet our Challenge Donor

Dr. Lisa Prokopich (OD ’90) Lisa Prokopich

“The University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science is my ‘home’. Since graduating from the program and completing my residency, I have been fortunate to be able to invest in the profession we all love, from right here at the School. My passion has been in the clinical education of our exceptional Waterloo Optometry students, but my other passions include case-based learning, curriculum advancement, scope of practice expansion and cultural safety and equity in health care. There is always more work to be done! While I have been a silent supporter for many years, this year I am hoping to encourage our optometry community along with our ‘School family’ of students, staff and faculty to invest in the vision of the Waterloo Eye Institute. I truly believe that the WEI will facilitate advances in optometric education, patient care and research, and will be a springboard to launch Canadian optometry into the future. Please join us on ‘Vision’ Tuesday!”
